Whose I am ? A short story. My mother was born in October 1938. Her parents were in Lwow, Poland, because of my grandfather's job. I think my grandmother came back to Romania, otherwise my mother became Polish by birth, which is not a problem, but I think it is important for a newborn the place of birth. The baby gets the "fingerprint" of the place. First impressions. Now we go back 370 years ago, after the 30 years war, when the border regions between catholic and evangelic were deserted. These were repopulated with desirable confessions, i.e. catholic. The source was the Western part of the former Empire, the Austrian Netherlands. Of course, the Empire looked for manufacturers and it gave them land to get their food to survive. In my particular case there were the Drapers or Clothiers (Tuchmacher) from Jihlava and Socks manufacturers (Strumpfwirkers) from Detrichovice, Andelska Hora (the Guild place). These communities were speaking the Empire's official language and had the Emperor's confession. Their mother's language was not always the official language but next generation learned the official language. Some names are sound German, others from Netherlands, even baptized Jews, French, English, but finally they all spoke German. I started with my mother's case. If the war didn't start probably she could be a little bit Polish by birthplace. So happened with the Drapers who became Moravian and the Socks manufacturers who became Silesian. In my particular case they resisted there until 1820 in the Silesian Moravia and until 1848 in Jihlava. They withstand to wars, life conditions and many other facts that I don't know. I think that my ancestors left these lands because of the industrial revolution which destroyed their style of life. They started to move Eastwards, to the border of the Empire, where nobody wanted to live because of the conflict with the Ottoman Empire. In Jihlava in-house manufacturers of cloth were desperate, my ancestor Theresia's father killed himself. Her brother became a well known land lawyer in Vienna. He became noble and said in his memories that the best solution to save Jihlava was to continue to manufacture beer, like 150 houses did this at 1800 when they had 250 drapers and 600 houses. Wiser were the Sock manufacturers from the Moravian Silesia who moved first to NeuArad, Banat, where they lived 5 years. There was born the future husband of Theresia, the unhappy orphan of the desperate draper. They married in Kronstadt (Brasov), Transylvania, in 1861. What did they in Brasov ? Having experience from the industrial revolution in Moravia and Silesia, my ancestor started the first socks factory from Transylvania. He had 3 wives, the second is from Jihlava and the third also, cousin of the second. 3 marriages, 18 children, most of them died. There were only 3 daughters from the marriage with my ancestor from Jihlava who have descendants in the XXI century. Yesterday I discovered a name of a socks merchant form the center of Vienna whose name is on the family tree. I think her son married with the first daughter of the owner of the socks factory from Kronstadt, Transylvania. What I know is that his brother owned an inn at the wall of the old city, after he was manager for another inside city. He had a courtyard inside the U shape inn where entered the horse coaches. He had a transport line to Hungary. Next inn (next street number) was owned by another person with coaches to Bucharest. The factory worked ok until the Empire started a commercial war with Romania, both parts increasing export taxes, causing bankruptcy of many flourishing border town businesses. As my Jihlava Moravian ancestor died soon after the birth of her last daughter, my direct ancestor, only the first daughter married with the son of the Vienna merchant remain in Brasov. She took care of her two younger sisters, as her mother asked before her end. My ancestor married again but unfortunately her wife died after 10 years. He crossed the mountains to Romania and started another weaving factory, at the invitation of the king Charles I, as our ancestors were invited to Moravia and Silesia hundreds of years ago. My ancestor died in August 1888, age 64. A lungs problem, probably linked to the lints, typical for this profession. In Jihlava this was the main cause of the men's death. For women the main cause was linked to births. So marrying second or third time was common for these manufacturers. I said it will be a short story. Now, whose I am ? A descendant of people invited by the Habsburgs to settle in a devastated part of the Empire, to manufacture something useful for the Army, to eat what they get from their lands, to speak German even they spoke other language, to be Habsburg citizens, later forced to move without having the Emperor's help, hated by the old settlers from Banat because there was no space for them, hated by the evangelic from Brasov who became from catholic evangelic starting from Luther, bankrupted by the war between an emperor and a king, deported by Russians because they were considered ethnic German, sent to DDR, trying to come back to Romania, sent to Hungary, deported to Austria, then moved to Germany, somewhere close to France, Belgium, Holland. What means this ? There are two persons, 80 years old and 94 years old. They don't know whose they are or were. One is my mother's first cousin from the youngest daughter of the Brasov socks manufacturer's family who really didn't care about the family history, the second is my mother's second cousin, from the first daughter, married with the son of the Vienna socks merchant. He knows more about the family but only about the Vienna connection. And his father was catholic and the mother evangelic. These are some cases from my research when the descendants of a family who left a place unconscious return to their ancestor's places... I received a fist yesterday (of course, I look for trouble...) from the Austrian group because I am not pure blood, my ancestors were Moravians and Silesians and even other Europeans. Of course I need to be in these group and I understand to limit with subjects to the Austrian border. Thank you for accepting me in the Czech group. My ancestors were born on Czech land, I visited both places and I climbed the Praded mountain. I'll continue to post here and in the Central Europe Genealogical group, even some subjects have links to German, Hungarian or Croatian speaking lands. My heritage is from two former empires, Habsburg and Ottoman, very interested to collect taxes from their citizens and less interested about their mother's language. And before their fall, not interested about their citizen's faith.
